What is
chronic kidney
disease (CKD)?

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition where your kidneys gradually lose their ability to function correctly. Although CKD is irreversible, it is treatable.

What is
dialysis?

Dialysis is the term used for a treatment that removes waste and extra fluid from your blood. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) are two types of dialysis treatment.

What is
Peritoneal dialysis (PD)?

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) uses a special solution (dialysate) and your own peritoneal membrane—the lining of your abdomen—as the filter to clean the blood and remove excess fluids. Like your regular kidneys, this type of dialysis continuously removes fluid inside your body.

What is
hemodialysis (HD)?

The word “hemo” refers to blood. Hemodialysis (HD) filters your blood outside your body using a machine and a manufactured filter, called a dialyzer.
